Heat pump running cost by region: all 14 UK supply regions ranked
Ofgem caps electricity and gas prices separately in each of Great Britain’s 14 supply regions, so the same heat pump costs a different amount to run depending on where you live. For a typical 3-bed semi (about 12,000 kWh of heat a year, SCOP 3.5), the cheapest region (East Midlands) comes in around £861/yr and the dearest (Merseyside, North Wales & Cheshire) around £948/yr, a gap of about £87 a year.

How this table is built
Model home: 3-bedroom semi-detached with good insulation, about 12,000 kWh of heat a year. Heat pump cost = heat ÷ SCOP 3.5 × the regional electricity unit price. Gas boiler cost = heat ÷ 0.9 × the regional gas unit price, plus the 29.04p/day gas standing charge, which you can drop when you remove the gas supply. The heat pump tariff column uses ~15p/kWh, the level of dedicated time-of-use heat pump tariffs in 2026.
Unit prices are the Ofgem price cap for 1 July to 30 September 2026 (direct debit, including VAT) for each supply region. Source: Ofgem energy price cap. Full model and assumptions: methodology.
